Note from the Artist: Stiff Pen Shells have iridescent interiors and commonly are washed up on southeastern beaches between North Carolina and Florida after storms. These shells can grow to 10 inches and often are found covered with barnacles. I discovered these Florida favorites while exploring Anclote Key Preserve State Park, 3 miles off the coast of Tarpon Springs, Florida. And, yes, the shells made it safely home with me.
